Which Fish to Choose For Your Aquarium?

fishWhen you want to purchase your first aquarium, choosing fish is an obvious fundamental step. However, with the diversity of species available, it is often difficult to know which species are best suited for the tank.

To begin with, it is important to disclaim that some fish can not live with each other. Some are territorial and more or less aggressive towards their neighbors; Others live in schools (packs); Others still live alone and only approach a potential partner when they want to mate.

Our first piece of advice is to design the composition of fish according to the capacity of the aquarium (volume, depth, width). The choice of fish will most certainly influence future choices of rocks, decoration and plants.

aquariumSome fish will be better suited for a dark soil while others will need sand to dig and create their home. Many species need hiding places to lessen their anxiety.
It is important to note that each fish has its own tendencies. In small volumes, it is recommended to put only one type of species per living area.
The easiest fish to care for advocated by us are classified according to arbitrary criteria.

In species that have easy maintenance, the palm usually returns to the fighter.  Originally from Asia, this species has the peculiarity of being able to live in a very small volume of water, the aquariums of the small type, generally sold wrongly for goldfish are perfectly suitable for them. In the wild, this species lives in small puddles and in marshy areas. Here is an example of the aquariums we are talking about

The second species recommended for a low capacity tank is a killifish from central Africa. A couple can easily be put in a shallow aquarium of about ten liters. They are low maintenance and can be taken care of without a filtration system but it is imperative to regularly perform water changes.

Since the female is very demanding of the male fish, an aquarium must be planted and provided with a hiding place for the male. If the aquarium is placed in a bright room, it will not be necessary to add a lighting system. However, the aquarium must be provided with a cover because the breed is great at jumping. Although maintenance is encouraged in a specific aquarium, ie only one species, it can be combined with calmer fish breeds in an aquarium with a much larger volume.

How Can Plumbing Companies Be Greener?

Most trades now a days are notorious for leaving messes and pollution everywhere they go.  This is terrible and needs to stop.  The earth will simply not survive if humans continue on this path.  Plumbers in particular are pretty bad for being environmentally unfriendly.  It’s usually the smaller companies though.  The bigger companies are usually more careful.  So what can plumbers do to be more careful?

pipesInsulating the Pipes

Simply insulating the pipes can have a major effect on how much energy is used in houses.  If all plumbing companies insisted on doing this then there would be a lot of energy saved every year.

Energy Efficient Water Heaters

These are another fix that can save more energy for houses.  Most people don’t know that this is the best option so it is up to the plumbing company to tell them as it could help them and the environment. Tankless water heaters in particular save up to 22% energy per year.

Proper Disposal of Waste

This is one of the points that directly impacts the environment and plumbers and all trades in general should make sure to do well.  After completing any job they must clean up after themselves properly.  If any chemicals were used in the job then they need to be disposed of properly and all materials need to go in the proper bins and not just left out in the regular trash. Stuff like metal pipes should be recycled not thrown out.

If plumbers follow these tips then they will help the environment greatly.

Thinking of the Environment When Cleaning Carpets

Important topic today and it is how to clean your carpet while being environmentally friendly.  Most people aren’t aware but there are a lot of chemicals that are very bad for the environment and there are better ways to clean that don’t harm the earth.

Good Products

Some natural solutions that will leave your carpets feeling fresh and also clean are found in your local grocery store.

carpet productOne of these things is arm and hammer baking soda.  This is a very popular old time product that is not just for baking.  All you have to do is simply shake some out and let it sit on the carpet for awhile.  Then you can vacuum it up, along with all the odor and dirt.

Biokleen carpet and rug shampoo is another great product that is plant based.  This product will cut through all the dirt in your carpet and wont leave any stains or residue behind.  It’s plant based so completely natural and something we can recommend here at A Green Day.

Earth friendly products concentrated carpet shampoo is another great product that is great for cleaning your carpet.  It is very ecologically sound and plant based so we like it as well.  This product will remove even the toughest dirt, grime and stains all day long.  One bottle will last a long time and clean a ton of the rooms in your house so you don’t need to use a lot of different products.

When in Doubt Use a Good Company

When in doubt you should find a company that cleans carpeting using natural methods.  There are some companies that use very harsh chemicals and don’t take the environment into account, which is obviously something that is not good for the future or our planet and something that we don’t like here at A Green Day.  We hope that as always you take these things into account and think of the environment when you clean your carpets.

The Greenest City in Canada

Vancouver has announced that by 2020 it will be the greenest city in the world. This was the challenge launched in February 2009 by its mayor, who to achieve this, decided to run for a second municipal term on November 19th.

At first glance, the city in western Canada looks like any other metropolis with its highways, its traffic, its skyscrapers, its subway, parks and bike paths. Yet the city of almost 600 000 people is a great example of a sustainable development.

The mayor is pleased with the media coverage and says that “recognition confirms that we are on the right track”. The British weekly declared in 2011 that the Canadian city Vancouver was the greenest and second in North America after San Francisco.

Its strengths are: a low level of CO2 emissions per capita and many LEED certified buildings.

In this city where Greenpeace and the David Suzuki Foundation were born it was said that “the solutions are in our nature”, the eco fiber, green spaces and roofs, bike lanes, compost, zero emission offices.

Environmental Thinking

The Ocean Wise program, which lists the species of endangered sea, was launched at the Vancouver Aquarium. The initiative led to the launch of a sustainable fisheries label adopted by hundreds of Canadian restaurants. The chef of the Listel, one of the major hotels in the city, says that his dishes are “100% sustainable in seafood.” The facility, equipped with solar panels, collecting organic waste in the rooms.

During the 2010 Winter Olympics “green” has left a legacy of energy-efficient sports facilities and a convention center with a green roof sustainable development model, the Olympic Village has transformed an old industrial site into a residential area.

The mayor spares no efforts to eduacate the people in a vast exercise of environmental thinking. He appealed to experts, including Vancouver’s David Suzuki, to identify ten key objectives to reach the goal by 2020: 33% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to 1990, and eliminate 50% of waste sent to landfills or incinerated. Half of urban transport should be done on foot, by bike or public transport. Green jobs are expected to double and Vancouver has become “a Prime Example for green businesses”.

Some 9500 people participated in a referendum. The city collected their ideas, identified discussion groups and adopted a list of concrete actions. “The plan was adopted in July and 125 projects are being implemented, says, the head of enforcement official.

Some were launched quickly, as the creation of organic waste collection points or the green space: each inhabitant of Vancouver has to live within 5 minutes of one of them, according to one of the selected targets.

By 2020, all new buildings should be carbon neutral. Since September, says officials, we have been separating the licensing of deconstruction and construction. There are many contractors in Vancouver and they all have to follow special regulations to qualify for licenses. Other types of trades like plumbers in Vancouver also have to follow strict regulations. They have several weeks to demolish and recycle materials upon job completion.
